The Super Bowl is over and NFL Draft season is about to be in full swing. Later this month, Indianapolis will become home to all 32 franchises and more than 300 former college football players for the long weekend known as the Scouting Combine. Prospects will be put through a number of physical challenges like the bench press, agility drills and the ever popular 40-yard dash. Then there is the much-maligned Wonderlic, a test designed to measure an individual’s brain power. Results aren’t supposed to be leaked to the public, but inevitably some poor soul’s low score winds up as material for hundreds of groan-inducing twitter jokes. And of course, players are weighed and measured for all to see. The process is criticized – the weigh-ins can seem creepy, and occasionally too much stock is put into a player’s performance in workouts, etc. – but almost everyone will agree that the event retains significance for at least three major reasons. Tyrann Mathieu is one of the most intriguing players in the 2013 NFL Draft. After taking college football by storm during the 2011 season and placing 5th in the Heisman Trophy voting, Mathieu was subsequently kicked off LSU’s football team. Mathieu was reportedly a repeat offender of the team’s substance abuse policy. Although he sat out the 2012 season so he could work on his off-the-field issues, Mathieu should still be drafted this April. (more…)

On Day Two of North team practices, a couple of linemen stood out once again. While Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher generally took on all comers in one on one drills, one player managed to give him some trouble – UCLA defensive end Datone Jones. Jones impressed those in attendance at weigh-ins yesterday and followed that up with a solid Monday afternoon. Today he was an absolute monster, beating Fisher – easily the best offensive lineman on the North roster – on back-to-back plays with a swim move and then a bull rush. In team drills, Jones flew around, at one point appearing out of nowhere to make a stop at the line of scrimmage. He is making a case for consideration in the top half of the first round in April.
