As the NFL game changes and evolves, teams are constantly making an effort to become more innovative.  Offenses are playing at faster paces and employing multiple formations all while using the same personnel packages.  Adding to the stress that these tactics put on defenses, offenses are also finding skill players that can be moved around the formation and excel in the run game along with the pass game.  To combat this, defenses are forced to find versatile players that have the skills to play in space while also having the ability to be a force in the run game.  Finding these “jack-of-all-trades” types can be a challenge much of the time, but the Cleveland Browns seem to have found a player that fits the mold in linebacker Chris Kirksey. Preseason Week Three Notes: Who Stood Out?

In their third preseason game, the Cleveland Browns lost to the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 27-6.  Although losing is never the goal, the more important thing that we can take away from the game is an evaluation of the Browns’ players in new schemes on offense and defense.  In this piece, I will mention some players who stood out in a positive or negative way while analyzing the game. Preseason Week One Notes: Browns First-Team Defense

Thursday night, the Cleveland Browns started off the 2013 preseason with a 27-19 win over the St. Louis Rams.  Although winning is always the ultimate goal, the more important thing that we can take away from the game is an evaluation of the Browns’ players in new schemes on offense and defense.  After writing about the first-team offense yesterday, this piece will include notes on the performance and usage of defensive players that I expect to make a considerable impact during the 2013 season. Saturday’s look at the Browns’ offense revealed that outside of guard and fullback, the starting lineup appears set.  Cleveland’s defense and special teams, on the other hand, will feature some interesting roster battles at linebacker, defensive back, and both kicking positions.  With starting jobs open at inside linebacker, cornerback, and free safety; and a couple of high profile rookies fighting for playing time, Defensive Coordinator Ray Horton is sure to witness some spirited competition once training camp opens.  Here’s a look at the Browns’ current defensive personnel, and who has the best shot to crack the final 53-man roster.
