Tavon Austin is undoubtedly the most dynamic prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft class.  At the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine, Austin blazed through the 40-yard dash with an official time of 4.34 seconds.  Austin’s 40 time was the second fastest overall behind Marquise Goodwin’s 4.27.  Austin also placed second in his position group (wide receivers) in the short shuttle with a time of 4.01 seconds.  The important thing about Austin’s impressive combine numbers is that they consistently show up on the football field. I’m not a big poker player.  Nor am I a country music fan.  But there’s a song by Kenny Rogers called The Gambler that happens to echo what many believe to be the cardinal rule of poker. Now that the dust is beginning to settle from the bloodletting that took place around the league on Monday, a day that saw a record seven head coaches fired, some names are beginning to surface as to who might be on the Browns radar for their head coaching vacancy.  (For the purposes of this piece, we’ll hold off on speculating any more about the General Manager/Director of Player Personnel candidates due to the fact that Joe Banner and Jimmy Haslam adamantly explained that their preference is to hire a dynamic head coach first.)

With the 2012 regular season coming to a close, it seems that the Cleveland Browns are, once again, in line for some changes.  Although you can make a very good case that the Browns made strides this season under head coach Pat Shurmur, all signs are pointing to owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner hiring a new head coach and GM, along with replacing many other employees within the organization.  At DraftBrowns, we have decided to take our best stabs at predicting who will be the head coach and general manager of the Browns for the foreseeable future.

The Monday after the last game of the season in the NFL is called “Black Monday” because it is typically the day that coaches and front office executives of struggling teams get fired. The powers that be often see little point in wasting valuable time keeping around personnel they don’t plan to have return and instead move fast to get the process rolling toward finding their replacements.


For the Cleveland Browns, with a new owner and new CEO/president coming in during the middle of the season, the changes coming down on the coaching staff and general manager have merely been a matter of time. It is widely assumed Head Coach Pat Shurmur and General Manger Tom Heckert will not be back next season. In fact, the moves should come quickly after the team plays its final game in Pittsburgh on Sunday. (more…)
