Recent Trends Open Windows to the 2013 Cleveland Browns Offense

A look back at recent seasons from the Chargers and Panthers may indicate where the 2013 Browns offense is headed (Photo: rebuildingsince1964.com)

Last season, lame duck Browns Head Coach Pat Shurmur spent the year trying to fit a square peg named Brandon Weeden into the round hole West Coast Offense.  Coming from an air-raid system in college that was heavy in no huddle and shotgun passing plays, Weeden never seemed comfortable with the WCO’s long-winded terminology and deliberate pace.  He often grew visibly frustrated as his coaches struggled to get the play calls into him on time.  The results were predictably aggravating to anyone associated with the team.  After the season, Shurmur was fired, and Rob Chudzinski and Norv Turner were brought in to install an offense tailored to the players on the team, rather than vice versa.  Chudzinski’s offense has evolved through the years, so it’s still too early to tell exactly what this version will look like.  Still, the past offers some clues, and a look back at the last five years of the combined résumés of Chudzinski and Turner should shed some light on what people can expect from the Cleveland passing game this season. 2013 Cleveland Browns Seven Round Mock Draft

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Tyler Eifert could be a first round target for the Browns whether they trade back or not (Photo: bloguin.com/crystalballrun)

The Browns entered the offseason with major holes to fill at defensive end and outside linebacker, and quickly pounced on Baltimore pass rusher Paul Kruger, and Oakland lineman Desmond Bryant as soon as the free agency signing period began.  Cleveland added several more veteran players to provide depth, but a number of holes remain.  The roster currently appears devoid of starters at cornerback and free safety, and could use help at tight end and guard as well.  After shipping Colt McCoy to San Francisco the team now has seven draft choices, but there is little question that the front office would like to recoup the second round pick spent last summer on Josh Gordon.  A trade with Miami to move back from six to twelve overall, and acquire one of their two second round picks, appears logical for both teams, and is assumed in this seven round mock draft.  Armed with eight total draft picks, here is how things might shake out for the Browns… (more…)

With Switch to 3-4 Looming, Browns Release Rucker

With a new scheme often comes personnel changes.  After signing a 5-year, $20.5m contract last March, Frostee Rucker has been released by the Cleveland Browns.  WIthout having direct knowledge of Rucker’s contract, it’s impossible to determine the exact cap result.  However, with the limited knowledge that’s floating around, the savings or penalty isn’t enough for it to be a big deal either way.  The most likely reason for the release is the fact that Rucker didn’t have a natural fit in Ray Horton’s 3-4 defense. 2013 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: John Cyprien

Tuesday, February 5th, 2013

John Cyprien has a chance at going very early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

DraftBrowns.com Editor: Brendan Leister

John Cyprien is one of the best safety prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft class.  After an impressive Senior Bowl week, more and more people that cover the draft are catching on to Cyprien’s talents.  With that said, people that work in the NFL have known about Cyprien for a while now and people shouldn’t be surprised if he’s drafted on the first day or early on the second day of the draft in April. 2013 NFL Mock Draft: Take Two – Justin Higdon (2/4/13)

(Updated 2/4/13)

The Super Bowl is in the books, the draft order is set, the major college All Star games are over and underclassmen have declared.  What better time to update the old mock draft?  I last attempted one just before the New Year, and it consisted of one lonely round.  This time?  How about three rounds?  It’s sure to go wrong once we learn more info at the scouting combine, and once free agency and trades start up.  But with teams having filled most of their coaching vacancies, and draft boards taking shape, there is enough information available to get a feel for what positions and types of players teams will target now that games are over.  So here’s an attempt to guess the first 96 picks of the 2013 NFL Draft ( well, 94 picks thanks to Cleveland’s selection of Josh Gordon in the Supplemental Draft and Bountygate) before player transactions and compensatory draft picks muddy the waters… (more…)

Projecting the Browns Front Seven to Ray Horton’s Defensive Scheme

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

How will the Browns’ current pieces in the front seven fit in Ray Horton’s 3-4 defense? (photo courtesy of azcardinals.com)

DraftBrowns.com Editor: Brendan Leister

With Ray Horton being brought in as the Cleveland Browns’ new defensive coordinator, a switch to an attacking 3-4 defense seems to be in the cards.  With the switch, most of the players in the front seven are in line for a position change.  None of these projections are sure things.  I could be way off on a few of them, but I am simply looking at the players’ skill sets and projecting them the best I possibly can.
